With the canoe to the first Camp...

After a hearty breakfast we launch the canoes, load and balance our packs and head towards the sun across Kawawaymog Lake.

The deep, dark lake becomes progressively shallower as we approach the entrance to the Aimable du Fond river. We will follow this for the next twelve kilometres and enjoy the variety of plant and wildlife around each bend. The shallow river is the perfect place to test our new canoeing skills.

Soon we reach the first set of rapids and our first portage. We unload our canoes and carry them and our packs over a well-marked trail to the next entry point on the river.

None of the portages are very long and after a final portage around a waterfall we have arrived at the first majestic northern lake we will traverse.

Every once in a while we will "raft up" that is, we will bring all the canoes together and hold on to them thus forming a large, stable floating platform. We reach our camp site on the lake shore or on an island around 2 pm.

After scouting out for appropriate tent and kitchen locations, is time to pitch our tents and "move in". This usually takes about an hour.  Then we can explore the area or a enjoy a swim in the lake. We dine on a well deserved meal. After clean-up we can enjoy the campfire and talk about tomorrow.
